2023 Translation and Interpreting Projects
The year 2023, in my perception, was another transitional post-pandemic year with an increasing trend of returning to in-person interpreting assignments and a more diverse portfolio of translation orders. These trends, no doubt, reflected a continued return to a more normal life and more diverse economic and leisure activities.
I continued working in my two major interpreting domains: health care, including workers’ comp appointments, and education. It’s amazing how diverse educational assignments can be: from PreK assessments to parent-teacher meetings to SST (student study team) meetings to all sorts of IEP meetings, like Initial IEP, Annual IEP, IEP Amendment and Tri-IEP (Triennial IEP). And the list can go on and on.
A good portion of my translation and proofreading work, as always, is in psychometrics and business. I worked on assessment materials, UI, and questionnaires of such talent management, assessment, and development companies as Heartstyles, Hogan 360, and Talogy. In the business domain, I translated a survey on digital equity for the state of California; informational and promotional flyers for California Connect, a public DDTP program funded by the California Public Utilities Commission; a transportation plan for a Bay Area city. I did a significant project in the legal domain translating some legal documents for a major hockey league, and some minor projects in education (school certificates and transcripts) and health care (medical terminology updates). It’s always fun for me to work on tourism projects and this year I got a large proofreading project to work on a destination guide and resort information of a world-famous tropical island resort. Such projects always widen the horizon and make me want to travel more.
Finally, I got involved in a new activity of taking notes of a community meeting held by the San Francisco Planning Commission. The Commission was studying opinions of a local Russian speaking community on matters of rezoning and affordable housing in San Francisco and needed help with capturing the attendees’ discussion points. Not exactly a T&I job but nevertheless a socially important work reflecting the diversity of the city residents.
So, overall, not a bad year at all with one significant caveat: translation and proofreading rates kept sinking further down (meaning it was harder to get well-paid jobs), while interpreting rates remained more or less stable, at least so far. I believe that in the next decade the AI translation and interpreting capabilities will continue affecting and reshaping the T&I industry with us language service providers having to adjust and adapt to new realities and technologies.

Interpreting

- Education: IEP (individualized education program) meetings, including Manifestation Determination and Re-entry meetings, BIP (behavior intervention plan) Addendum meetings, IEP Amendment meetings, and parent counseling per student’s IEP sessions

2021 Translation and Interpreting Projects
This past year was marked by ups and downs in the COVID-19 pandemic development ranging from high hopes it might soon be over to deep frustration when the hopes didn’t come true and yet another wave was surging affecting all and everyone. Translation and interpreting, as services provided to businesses and individuals, were affected, and struggling too.
The mask mandate and social distancing requirements continued to impact onsite interpreting. More and more clients were moving to remote/online interpreting platforms, including telephonic and video interpreting. As a result, I did a lot of remote educational and health care interpreting, including IEP sessions and routine medical appointments.
I kept working on an ongoing translation project for a major client in the field of career and leadership development, personal growth, and mental health and well-being.
Another highlight was a translation project on the Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program serving the needs of the local community in the city of San Francisco.
So, despite the continued pandemic it was a productive year that kept me busy and encouraged me to try new approaches like remote interpreting. Hopefully, in 2022 we will see a decisive change for the better and the pandemic will finally retreat allowing us all to return to more normal life.
2020 T&I Projects
In this past year of great uncertainty and losses, physical and emotional hardships, and personal courage I was glad to make my small contribution interpreting for patients who needed on-site Russian medical interpreting and translating training materials focused on mental and emotional health, stress coping techniques, parenting issues, and keeping well and fit in these unprecedented times. The pandemic brought about new types of texts and documents people needed to get translated, like Coronavirus Travel Certification Form, Travel Advisory letter and others.
Although businesses were hard hit by the lockdowns and sanitary safety measures, there were still orders to localize business website content and translate legal and marketing materials among other things. It was my pleasure to translate materials for the CAL High-Speed Rail project and learn new vocabulary in the field of railroad and rail infrastructure.
Like so many other people and businesses, I look forward to leaving the pandemic behind and being able to take again in-person Russian interpreting orders and help more clients with their English-Russian translation projects.

2017 Projects
The year of 2017 was marked with an increased demand for interpreting services. In addition to health care interpreting, I had a lot of assignments for the social services sector and was hired to interpret at an asylum interview.
An interesting long-term project in education is still in progress: editing transcripts of an English video lessons course for a secondary school in Russia. I truly enjoy the variety and unusual format of this project.
As always, I have done a lot of translations in the business and marketing field, a large portion of which was translating content for companies’ websites: Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, Warranty Policy, Terms and Conditions, Press/News Releases, Product Descriptions.
Psychometrics materials, traditionally, comprised a significant share of my translation projects.
Finally, I continued to hone my skills in translating and editing health care texts: medical insurance companies’ newsletters, posters, and informational texts, in addition to routine translations of patient forms, instructions, and educational materials.
